All about Adjustable Beds

Enjoy the benefits of an Adjustable bed every night

We all cherish a deep, good and rejuvenating sleep – yet so many of us are sleep deprived for a variety of reasons. Adjustable bed benefits will revolutionise your sleep experience! TEMPUR adjustable beds provide a customised sleep solution to help you benefit the most from your sleep time.

Our latest range of adjustable beds promises to make sleeping a healthy and restorative experience! They are designed to accommodate different positions as they recline and incline in two parts, the upper and lower. They combine the comfort and convenience of an electric bed with the health benefits of an ergonomic, orthopedic bed.

Benefits of Adjustable Bed Bases

One of the primary benefits of an adjustable sleep solution is that your body sleeps in an ergonomically correct position going with the natural curvature of the spine. A healthy posture during sleep helps to eliminate any problems that can inhibit sleep.

An adjustable sleep solution is able to distribute pressure evenly over the entire sleep surface reducing strain on the heart, circulatory system, neck pain, neck and shoulder tension, back pain, muscle and joint pain and even asthma, acid reflux and snoring. This way, each individual is able to meet their specific health needs with an adjustable bed. The benefits are enormous: healthy posture, pressure relief, better circulation and customised support where you need it.

Relieve Back Pain

An adjustable bed allows you to raise and support your shoulders into a position that closely matches the contours of your body and keeps your spine in a more natural position. Maintaining a slightly inclined position through the night relieves pressure on your spine that can cause it to compress during the night. This can help to prevent conditions such as sciatica – a condition where the sciatic nerve gets trapped near the base of the spine (this nerve controls the majority of signals heading between the brain and the limbs and is very painful when put under pressure). By supporting the base of the spine it is possible to keep the spine aligned and help to prevent trapped nerves and release those that are currently lodged. An adjustable bed eliminates the need for piling up pillows to elevate the upper body – which can cause neck ache and headaches.

Reduce Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

Snoring is the result of the windpipe being slightly closed from the weight of your neck, whilst in the sleeping position. Elevating the head and shoulders alters the direction of gravity and reduces the obstruction of your windpipe, thus reducing snoring. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is a condition where breathing is briefly interrupted or becomes very shallow during sleep. These breathing pauses can last from 10 to 20 seconds and can occur up to hundreds of times in the night. Typically the sufferer is jolted out of his natural sleep rhythm, which results in them spending less time in deep and more time in light sleep. Raising the head and shoulders with an adjustable bed can have a positive effect on sleep apnoea in the same way it alleviates snoring, i.e. it alters the direction of gravity and the soft tissues in the back of the throat are less likely to obstruct breathing.

Improved Digestion

Being slightly upright is also highly beneficial for your digestion as it helps your body to process food during the night, by using the natural forces of gravity. Whilst it is never recommended to you to sleep on a full stomach, if you have eaten within a few hours prior to going to bed, then addressing your position can be helpful. Acid reflux can be greatly reduced by elevating the upper body. Once the head and shoulders are elevated, your stomach will be below your esophagus so acid or food can’t come back up.

Reduced Swelling

If you’ve ever sprained or broken a limb, it’s often recommended to elevate it to relieve pain and swelling. This allows the heart to circulate your blood more quickly, which reduces water retention, heals bruising and speeds up the healing process. Elevating your legs every night whilst resting in bed or while you sleep means your heart doesn’t have to work as hard to circulate blood to your legs. This can relieve swelling and pain to the lower extremities and is good for general circulation as well as benefiting your heart. Anyone who spends a lot of time on their feet can benefit from this. It can also prevent conditions such as varicose veins caused by the pooling of blood in the lower limbs.

In Pregnancy

Back ache, snoring and swollen legs and feet are all common complaints in pregnancy. Adjustable bed bases can alleviate these symptoms as well as simply providing a more comfortable resting position for women whilst their bodies are not quite “their own”.
